Continental Diamond Tool Corp. (CDT), a family-owned US manufacturer of precision superabrasive grinding wheels and dressing tools, today announced it has completed its acquisition of PG&F Superabrasives, a US superabrasives business with operations in Royersford, Pennsylvania, and Montrose, Colorado. CDT acquired the business from Nimbus, a Dutch-German investment firm with a particular focus on industrial and manufacturing companies. CDT has also formed a strategic alliance with Nimbus portfolio company Winterthur Technology Group (WTG) to expand CDT's conventional bonded abrasives offering for customers across North America.

Demand for precision grinding continues to grow as manufacturers in aerospace and defense, electronics and semiconductors, medical, and advanced ceramics push for tighter tolerance and higher productivity. Since 1973, CDT has served these markets with strong application engineering, proprietary bond and dressing technology, and a customer-first approach. The addition of PG&F Superabrasives builds directly on that strategy.

Nick Viggiano, President of CDT

PG&F Superabrasives brings an experienced team with decades of formulation and process expertise. The Royersford facility adds precision plating and dressing tools, 3D-printed vitrified bond wheels, precision dresser spindles, and unique industrial abrasive compounds. The two Montrose facilities add small-wheel solutions for CNC round tool manufacturing and large-wheel solutions for centerless and double-disc grinding. With the addition, CDT is one of the largest US-based superabrasives solutions providers, with manufacturing operations in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and the United Kingdom.

  • CDT President Nick Viggiano said: "For more than fifty years, CDT has grown by investing in people who know this craft deeply. PG&F Superabrasives brings a team with decades of experience, and we are proud to welcome them to the CDT team."
  • CDT CEO Brian VanHall said: "We are very excited about the future of advanced materials and advanced manufacturing. As a growing partner for superabrasive solutions, the acquisition and alliance is built on a shared vision and set of values to provide the best solutions, service, and support to North American manufacturers.”

As a result of the alliance, CDT expands its conventional bonded abrasives offering across North America with WTG's technologies. Customers gain matched grinding wheel and dressing solutions spanning superabrasive and conventional technologies, supported by CDT's local application engineering.

Winterthur Technology Group CEO Edmar Allitsch said: "CDT shares our commitment to technical excellence and close customer support. As our exclusive North American distributor for precision application conventional bonded abrasives, CDT brings our technologies to customers across the region with the application expertise and the level of customer service they rely on. We will cooperate to offer local finishing and profiling operations for vitrified grinding wheels at CDT to provide quick response and flexibility for US customers. The stronger presence in the North American market combined with our focus on EMEA and Asia Pacific will help to further accelerate our growth plans. We will continue to support the Royersford and Montrose product portfolio outside of North American markets. Our partnership will also accelerate further innovation by cooperation, for example in the field of 3D printed superabrasive tools. We look forward to our long-term cooperation."

Nimbus Senior Partner Henning Andresen said: "The US superabrasives team has a history of strong capabilities and customer relationships. CDT's focus on precision superabrasives and long-term customer relationships and ownership make it the right home for this business and its people."

Customers will continue to receive products and service without interruption. PG&F Superabrasives will continue to operate under its name as part of CDT. Customers will have a single point of contact for sales and application engineering, and customer service stays in place at each company. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
