DMG MORI Demonstrates NLX 2500 With Gelato Scoop

DMG MORI USA used Chicago Innovation Days to demonstrate the machining capabilities of its NLX 2500 Gen 2 through the production of a stainless-steel ice cream scoop. The one-of-a-kind item was presented as a creative manufacturing demonstration rather than a conventional industrial component.
The project was discussed with Luke Ivaska, General Manager of Engineering, who explained the idea behind the demonstration and the decision to bring Jesse Albuquerque, owner of Jesse’s Gelato, to the event. DMG MORI said the collaboration turned a simple gelato scoop into a showcase for precision machining and manufacturing innovation.
According to the company, the NLX 2500 Gen 2 carried out turning, milling, transfer and engraving operations during the demonstration. The machine was operated with CELOS X and SINUMERIK ONE control, and included a 12,000 RPM milling spindle, turnMASTER spindle and enhanced rigidity intended to support precision stainless-steel machining.
Matt Covel, an Applications Engineer, programmed and ran the NLX 2500 Gen 2 throughout the event. One highlighted feature was an embossed DMG MORI logo on the scoop. For that operation, the company used a 4:3:1 ALGRA S.P.A. speeder head and a 1 mm-diameter ball-nose end mill running at 43,000 RPM.
DMG MORI reported that the 16 × 100 mm logo area was machined in around 13 minutes. That figure refers specifically to the logo-machining operation, rather than the total time required to manufacture the complete ice cream scoop. The company positioned the project as an example of how its machine tools can combine multiple processes in a visually distinctive live demonstration.
